Redding California is nestled at the end of the Sacramento Valley. This hidden California jewel offers immense recreation, living and business opportunities. Located within the city limits is the famous Sundial Bridge , Turtle Bay Museum and the newly renovated Cascade Theatre. Redding is bisected by the world class fly fishing Sacramento River and is close to hiking, camping and boating at Lassen National Park, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and the renowned Shasta Lake Redding is the regional center of Northern California for health and legal services, retail shopping and employment. Located at I-5 and highways 299 and 44, Redding is the hub for all of Shasta County and the gateway to the Trinity Alps and Cascade Recreation areas. There are two major hospitals in Redding, Mercy Medical Center and Shasta Regional Medical Center. There are also 15 convalescent hospitals, 32 assisted living facilities and a veteran's outpatient clinic. Redding is also home to a large medical community of Physicians, Dentists and walk-in clinics.

Redding has great schools. There are three major high schools, six middle schools, 46 elementary schools, 4 charter schools, and 30 private schools in Redding. Redding also has five colleges and universities: National University, a four year, private university, Shasta College, a public community college, CSU Chico at Shasta College University Center, Simpson University, a four-year Christian college, Shasta Bible College and Graduate School, a four-year Christian college.

There are many great community events held in Redding each year, Kool April Nites, The Redding Rodeo and famous Asphalt Cowboy's Pancake Breakfast, The Rodeo Parade, The Trade Club's Lighted Christmas Parade and summer favorite Marketfest. The Exchange Club's Air Show is held bi-annually.

McDonald's in Redding...here and gone.

McDonald's ...her one day and gone the next

Yes, if you drove by McDonald's on east Cypress Avenue on Sunday, all looked normal. What you didn't see were the plans in place to start the "rebuild of McDonald's". Those plans were followed and early Monday morning, the old and established  first McDonald's in Redding came tumbling down. An era came to an end, and another newer fast food restaurant will rise like a Phoenix in its place. Those of us that passed by the site today that were here when the first McDonald's in Redding opened experienced some nostalgia that will not be easily forgotten.

It all started back in the early 1970's when Cypress Avenue east of I5 had a few small real estate offices, a church, a bike shop,  a bank (Wells Fargo), and a few other small establishments. East Cypress was almost rural when Dave McGeorge decided to be a pioneer and open a new fast food hamburger restaurant in a franchise chain known as McDonald's. The first one on I5 from Sacramento north, all of us locals were thrilled, and it rapidly became the place to go for the kid's night out each Friday night. What a place it was with fast hamburgers, French fries, and a shake, all in just a couple of minutes. And, it matched the young couples budget, for you could get a whole family of six fed for 5 bucks. Such a deal.

Over the next few years, the rush was on to join the excitement of the newly discovered East Cypress area near where McDonald's was located. Wendy's came on the scene, as did Burger King and others, for all of this area was next to the big shopping place known as the K-Mart Center. Hilltop Drive was growing and Mt. Shasta Mall opened, but Cypress with McDonald's was still the place to go. And, McDonald's offered more than just good fast food. They offered jobs for many teens that needed that part time job. In fact, our current City Manager, Kurt Starman, was an employee, for this was a good job for a student. Many in Redding today can claim McDonald's as one of their employers, and it was a good place to work for good folks, Dave McGeorge.

Well, change is inevitable, and McDonald's is no exception. The old store was showing its age, and Dave decided it was a better business decision to demolish the old and build a new store. I'm now anxious to see the new building, for it will be the latest in design, functionality, and service. As it was back in the 1970's, it will rapidly become a new landmark in Redding. Congratulations, and thanks, Dave, for what you have done for Redding over the years, and for what you are going to do now for the next generation. Rest assured, you will still hear it heard at area schools, "see you at McDonald's".
